Learn how Mickey Health works and how to use it

What Is Mickey Health?

Mickey Health is a personal and family health dashboard that helps you view, organize, and monitor your authorized health records from Epic MyChart-enabled health systems. The app provides a unified interface to track your health information, including lab results, vital signs, medications, conditions, and more.

How Connection Works

Mickey Health uses the industry-standard SMART on FHIR OAuth protocol to securely connect to your Epic MyChart account. Here's the step-by-step process:

  1. Select Your Health System: You choose which health system you want to connect (e.g., UCSF Health, UC Davis Health, Sutter Health, or any other Epic-enabled health system)
  2. Redirect to MyChart: Mickey Health redirects you to your health system's official MyChart login page
  3. Log In with MyChart: You enter your MyChart username and password directly on your health system's secure login page. Mickey Health never sees or stores your MyChart password
  4. Review and Approve Access: MyChart shows you exactly what data Mickey Health is requesting access to. You can review the requested permissions and choose to approve or deny the request
  5. Authorization Code: If you approve, Epic sends Mickey Health a one-time authorization code
  6. Token Exchange: Mickey Health exchanges this authorization code for access tokens on our secure servers. These tokens allow the app to retrieve your health data
  7. Retrieve Health Data: Mickey Health uses the access tokens to request your authorized health information from Epic's FHIR API and displays it in the app

Security Model

Mickey Health takes security seriously. Here's how we protect your data:

  • No Password Storage: We never ask for or store your MyChart password. All authentication happens directly through Epic's secure login system
  • HTTPS/TLS Encryption: All data transmitted between your device, Mickey Health servers, and Epic systems is encrypted in transit
  • Server-Side Token Management: Access tokens are exchanged and stored securely on our servers, not in your browser
  • Encrypted Storage: Your health data is encrypted at rest on our secure servers
  • OAuth 2.0 Standard: We use the industry-standard OAuth 2.0 protocol, the same technology used by major apps to connect to services like Google, Facebook, and Apple
  • SMART on FHIR: We follow the SMART on FHIR specification, a healthcare-specific standard for secure health data access
